The stages

Unlike waypoints(see related tutorial), waypoints are places where you will stop. In this tutorial, we’ll explain everything you need to know to manage waypoints in the best possible conditions, both when preparing your route and when guiding.

Stage or waypoint?

What’s the difference in practice?

The main difference between the two is guidance. When it comes to a stage, GPS requires you to validate it before continuing your journey. If you don’t, it will keep bringing you back to that point (we’ll explain why below). For a waypoint, on the other hand , GPS is more flexible. Once you’ve entered a 500-meter radius, it tolerates you ignoring its indications and continuing on to the next stage!

Who is what and why?

POIs, Precise addresses, Point on map…

POIs (points of interest) such as accommodation, restaurants, places to visit and service stations are systematically defined as stages. This makes sense, since it’s where you stop 😉.

Among the POIs, only the passes are classified as waypoints. You can stop there if you wish, but you don’t have to.

On the map, the stages are represented by an inverted teardrop icon.

Points you place directly on the map and addresses you search for are automatically defined as waypoints. These points appear on the map as a white circle surrounded by black.

To improve the legibility of your route, you can hide these waypoints on the map.

Tip: To convert a waypoint into a stage, simply click on the corresponding point on the map, then select the “Convert to stage” option.

During guidance?

Or why you need to validate a stage to continue your journey

When you enter a 1 km radius of a stage, the GPS will alert you with a notification and voice announcement. Until you manually validate the stage, the GPS will continue to direct you to it. There are two reasons for this, which we’ll illustrate with a few concrete examples:

– If your stopover is an accommodation, you may pass in front of it without realizing it, and it may be too late to turn back. If the application considered that passing the accommodation validated the stage (as most GPS systems do), it would stop navigation or go straight on to the next stage. However, it’s quite possible that you still need to be guided to your accommodation. That’s the choice made by the 68° team: until you confirm your arrival at the accommodation, the application will continue to guide you. This way, there’s no stress if you take the wrong street or miss the address!

– If your destination is a small town, the application will guide you to the city center by default, as all GPS systems do. However, you may choose to stop somewhere else, such as a parking lot. Once you’ve finished your visit, a traditional GPS will force you to pass through the city center before continuing, as it will consider that you haven’t reached your destination. With the 68° application, all you have to do is manually validate the stage to move on to the next one, without having to return to the city center!
